Ucha Nanuashvili
Human Rights Center (Georgia)
I worked at different human rights organisations in the past, I served as an Ombudsman and Head of the National Human Rights Institution during the last five years (in 2012-2017) and now I am again back to civil society and working at the Human Rights Center.
While serving as Public Defender (Ombudsman) of Georgia, I have implemented my mandate for the protection and promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Georgia. Under my leadership, the Georgian Public Defender’s(PDO) mandate in recent years has been further expanded. I supervised and facilitated the work of the National Preventive Mechanism, as well as the Monitoring mechanisms for the implementation of the anti-discrimination law (Equality Body) and the UN CRPD. PDO has also fulfills functions of Military Ombudsman.
Furthermore, as a founder and Executive Director of the Georgian Human Rights Center (HRIDC), I dedicated many years to protection and promotion of human rights, rule of law and peace in Georgia. I was coordinator of the South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders and chairman of the board of the Human Rights House – Tbilisi.
I’ve spent the better part of the last two decades dedicated to campaigning for human rights, peace, and justice.
