Yuliana Lantipo

Tabloid Jubi (Indonesia)

My name is Yuliana Lantipo, a journalist in Jayapura, the capital of Papua province. Papua is an area of low intensity conflict over the last 50 years since Indonesia invaded our land in 1963. A widely-manipulated referendum took place in 1969. Indonesia winning 100 percent of the consultative voting. I have seen and covered various human rights violations, from extrajudicial killings to forced disappearances. Healthcare is another issue. My land has the highest HIV prevalence in Indonesia. Foreign journalists are restricted to enter Papua. Local journalists are either compromised or harassed. Arrests and harassment against ethnic Papuan, from student activists to business leaders, are our daily bread. Indonesia failed to address human rights violations in Papua.
